Surprising number of men attended the first Women’s Leadership Series

The Women of Kellogg Leadership series was created by Eris Thomas, a graduate of the Kellogg School of Management, to address women in the boardroom, leadership challenges, climbing the corporate ladder and stayed connected to the community.

On Saturday, April 26, 2014, dozens of women were scheduled to gather at North Western University’s Kellogg School of Management in Coral Gables, Florida for the first Women of Kellogg Leadership Series event. Betsy Atkins, the well-known entrepreneur and current member of highly respected boards across the nation, was to speak at the event.

As more and more women I arrived, one couldn’t help but notice that men were also in the crowd. Why were they at a Women’s Leadership Series event on a Saturday morning?  When asked, one male business student said, “I work with women on a daily basis. It is essential for me to understand how women work in order for us to do the best job.” The Atlantic recently published an article entitled “Why So Many Men Don’t Stand Up for Their Female Colleagues.” While the title may be self explanatory, the article reveals quite a bit about how men feel about women in the workplace. It states, “In the conversation about women in leadership, male voices are noticeably absent.” The article goes on to explain that in order to change this, we must challenge the current perception of women in the workplace and accept their roles as top executives.

Moving forward, Eris Thomas will invite both men and women to attend Women’s Leadership Series events. While the series will continue to be geared towards women, it is important to note that we can all learn from one another as business leaders!
